HOW TO PLANT A TREE OR SHRUB

•  Call Miss Utility (811) before digging to prevent hitting something  underground. This is a free service that can save you thousands of  dollars and many headaches!

• Scrape off / remove any turf before digging.

• Dig planting hole slightly wider than what you are installing (a few inches all the way around).

• Gently loosen the roots on the root ball to prevent circling and to allow them to grow out into their new home.

•  When placing root ball in the hole make sure it is 2” - 3” above the  existing ground level.  It is better to be higher than below grade.  (Smaller container plants ≤ 1 gallon in size can be planted at the  existing soil level but it is best to have them slightly raised.)

• Backfill the hole with existing soil or mix in a compost or humus to existing soil before backfilling.

• Lightly tamp down backfill to work out any voids.

• Mulch a ring around the backfilled area.  Do NOT mulch up to the trunk.

• Water thoroughly!
